This week in worship we will be taking a look at Ephesians 6:10-20, a passage which speaks about putting on the full armor of God.
Paul wrote the letter to the Ephesians while he was sitting in a Roman jail cell. He was surrounded by guards who were likely wearing armor. Perhaps as he looked at their helmets and breastplates and swords, this is what inspired this passage about putting on the armor of God.
Sometimes life feels like a battle—not necessarily against other people—but against spiritual forces that are trying to cut us down and distract us from God’s truth being lived out in our lives. God equips us with spiritual armor to protect us from the advances of evil and enable us to serve God more fully.
The belt of truth grounds us when lies and confusion surround us.
The breastplate of righteousness guards our hearts and reminds us that our worth comes not from any mistakes we might have made, but from our identity in Christ.
The shoes of peace help us step forward with grace even in conflict.
The shield of faith protects us from doubts and fears that try to weaken our relationship with God.
The helmet of salvation covers our minds, reminding us of who we belong to and the hope we have in Christ.
The sword of the Spirit, the Word of God, is not a weapon of harm but of truth—God’s Word that guides, comforts, and convicts us.
Paul goes on to tell us to “Pray in the spirit at all times…” Prayer ties our armor together, keeping us connected to God our divine commander.
To be strong in the Lord doesn’t mean that we never feel weak. Instead, it means trusting that God’s power is greater than any force we might face.
Is there a piece of armor that you need in particular right now? And how can connecting to God in prayer help you put on that armor each and every day?
I pray that as you walk the road of faith that the armor of God would protect and keep you all your life long.
Peace,
Pastor Nadia
