This Lent at PPC we are seeking to be “Purveyors of Awe”—people who seek out awe and share it with the people in our lives. In his book Awe: The New Science of Everyday Wonder and How it Can Transform Your Life, Dacher Keltner describes awe as the human experience of encountering vastness—whether the vastness of a stunning piece of music, a religious experience, wild terrain, or glimpsing microscopic complexity.
Such experiences “right-size” our understanding of ourselves, as we start to see ourselves as smaller and the world as bigger—a perspective connected with a sense of peace, humility, and wellbeing in our lives. When we think of our brief lives in the context of God’s vast creation and eternity of time, we acknowledge God’s place as the true center of all that is.
Throughout this season of Lent, I encourage you to pursue that holy vastness in wild places, powerful experiences, moving music, and simple acts of noticing deeply. Pursue awe intentionally AND let awe catch you off guard.
With prayers for an AWEsome week,
Pastor Laura
