Dear Partners in the Gospel,
Now that we are into March, we have officially begun the season of Lent. This year, we have some very exciting things happening in the life of our church. I am pleased to be able to share some of these things with you!
For quite some time, the PPC Mission Committee has been having a conversation around international mission. We surveyed our congregation to get feedback and ideas. After more than a year of considering this possibility, we were not sensing a strong call to any particular mission trip. However, as a committee, we felt God was leading us to pursue international mission in some way. At one of our committee meetings, one of our members brought up the idea of sponsoring a well overseas for a region in need of clean water. We spent several meetings discussing this possibility. Water for South Sudan (based in Rochester) seemed like a perfect organization to partner with, especially given our partnership with Building Minds in South Sudan. The needs in this country are many, and we are excited to partner with WFSS in their mission to bring clean water to the people of South Sudan.
Our church is supporting Water for South Sudan by providing the funds necessary to sponsor a well in a village of South Sudan. One single well has the capacity to serve thousands of people. As of May 2016, WFSS has drilled 282 wells in the region, and they have seen firsthand that clean water has provided improved health, better education, and increased entrepreneurship. The total cost of a well is $15,000 dollars. Our donation will come out of our “Mission Reserve” fund, which has been designated for international mission. This project was made possible by the generosity of our congregation. Thank you!
As we move through the season of Lent together, here are some ways that you can be involved in this project:
Lenten Devotional: This devotional will give us the opportunity to reflect on God’s Word, learn about the issue of clean water, and take action. Look for copies in the narthex, or you may also download it from our website.
Take the H2O Challenge! This is a simple way to support the ministry of Water for South Sudan. First, make water your only beverage for 2 weeks. Second, save the money you would normally spend on beverages (juice, soda, coffee, etc.). Third, donate the money you saved. $10 can give one person clean water, and $50 can give water to a family of five! Look for our donation collection bin in the church narthex.
Education: We have copies of “A Long Walk to Water” available, which is the story of Salva Dut, the founder of Water for South Sudan. The Missions Committee read this together and found it to be very inspiring! We also have copies of a children’s book called “Just Add Water” that are available.
Worship: During Lent, Steve and I will be working through a sermon series called “Living Water,” which will focus on stories from Scripture where God offers hope and renewal through water.
Prayer! We would love for our community to commit to praying this Lent for the nation of South Sudan, the ministry of Water for South Sudan, and all those throughout the world in desperate need of clean water.
I am deeply thankful for this opportunity our church has to reach beyond its walls, and this case, across the world! May the peace of Christ be yours this Lenten season.
Yours in Christ,
